Our three panelists included my former boss, Kevin Bisson, who is the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Mercury Systems. The other two were John Murray, President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Hospitality Properties Trust and Alan Trefler, Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Pegasystems Inc. Hence the “C-Suite” theme.
I awoke at 4:00am and was showered, dressed, and out the door by 5:20am. The drive started out pleasantly as the sun was rising and it was warm. By 6:45am I was lodged in traffic headed in to Cambridge with a million other souls. I looked at the people in the vehicles around me and tried to imagine who they were and what jobs they were headed to. How do they do that five days a week? What does the rest of their life look like?
If you have been following me lately, you will remember my post about the last time I had to polish up my corporate suit of armor. In early April, I had a job interview and was shocked to find how unprepared I was to don the suit of business. This time, I merely cleaned up my daily act with a simple outfit and jewelry. I still have no make-up, but somehow it didn’t matter to me, as the face in the mirror without it is one I’ve grown very accustomed to seeing.
The breakfast panel was well received and I felt very comfortable bridging the gap between the life I live now and the one from my very recent past. Lots of friends asked what I was doing and when, if ever, was I coming back to that world. I can’t say for sure, but it is no longer a huge tug on my emotions when I explain the path I am choosing.
